When I read through IFR materials online, or when I hear pilots talking about approaches, they often talk about using fixes to get to/through the approach.

Two questions (closely related). Firstly, just to make sure I completely understand, what are fixes in this particular context? Secondly, how are they used when a pilot is using a particular approach?:
