However there will likely be a lot of violent tumbling, whereas the "rollout" on ice may actually work out better in many cases. It would be interesting to analyze or at least think about the advantages and disadvantages of landing on ice.

Oct 17, 2023 at 20:23 | comment | added | Bergi | What makes a storm irregular but rainfall and wind regular? Where do you draw the line?

Oct 17, 2023 at 14:20 | comment | added | Steve Pemberton | @quietflyer - I think they got the point across that they are looking for a soft landing on normal flat ground or water. But your links were good. The cardboard box one reminded me of a behind the scenes documentary about a Sean Connery movie (I forget which one) where he falls from a collapsing bridge into a ravine. Connery did the stunt himself, they placed a whole bunch of cardboard boxes at the bottom of the ravine that he fell into. It's apparently a common stunt technique, surprising how well it worked.

Oct 17, 2023 at 13:41 | comment | added | quiet flyer | Is it allowed to make the landing into a gigantic pile of empty cardboard boxes? Because that is what has in fact been done. Landing into boxes: youtube.com/watch?v=DEP8juRSBRo . Landing into a net: youtube.com/watch?v=7hG44arJ00s

Fixed a couple typos

Oct 17, 2023 at 13:10 | comment | added | Amazon Dies In Darkness | BTW, this was done roughly a decade ago (very rough estimate!), but it involved landing on a specially designed ramp. Still, an incredible feat.
Oct 17, 2023 at 13:09 | comment | added | Amazon Dies In Darkness | I'm curious too... I'll give it an edit to fix a couple minor typos and an upvote to boot.
