It is very difficult to get more than 5 times the solar irradiance to a plane from laser, because you need to cool the photovoltaic cells in the plane. See: rand.org/pubs/technical_reports/TR898.html . I was crunching some numbers, and for something equivalent to a current airliner, you want at least one order of magnitude more power density than that. Something like 100 times more than solar power. | |
