Feb 5, 2016 at 0:58 comment added J W @unrecognizedfallingobject Absolutely. See 14 CFR 91.121, the requirements are fairly straightforward.
Feb 5, 2016 at 0:38 comment added UnrecognizedFallingObject @JonathanWalters -- I wonder if you can substitute some other airport's altimeter setting in this case...
Feb 5, 2016 at 0:37 comment added UnrecognizedFallingObject @Steve -- if you can get me a place that has an archive of METARs for a US airport going back several days, yeah, I can get you the METAR...
Feb 4, 2016 at 22:25 comment added J W @TomMcW Yes, but a strict legal reading will show that method is only allowable if your aircraft is not radio equipped. All aircraft flying below 18,000, except aircraft not equipped with a radio, are required to set their altimeter to the current reported altimeter setting of an appropriate available station. See 14 CFR 91.121.

Feb 4, 2016 at 18:43 comment added TomMcW If you are on the ground at the field in question could you not just set the alt to read field elevation? Then you would have the correct pressure dialed in.
Feb 4, 2016 at 18:41 comment added TomMcW @Simon I think his main question is what to do about the situation. How to get the correct reading.
Feb 4, 2016 at 15:38 comment added Simon Since SLPNO means that the surface pressure is unavailable, how could it mean anything else except that the altimeter setting is unreliable? Are you asking why is didn't include a maintenance indicator, or what does SLPNO mean? I'm guessing that 2248 is the highest possible measurement.
Feb 4, 2016 at 13:51 comment added Steve Could you post the METAR in full?
