The airport is still owned by Hearst Corp for their private use even though the Castle and most of the ranch are now a state park. Here's the airport info. | |

I'm guessing that the caretakers decided it wasn't worth the trouble since nothing really forbids an aircraft from landing on private property with permission, or even without in an emergency. There are a lot of perfectly good landing fields that are not marked as such, and aren't required to. | |
